SEA TRAIN Vessel Safely Sails Across the Indian Ocean and Arrives in India

Click: Time:2026-08-04 11:34:05

The SEA TRAIN departed from China bound for Kandla Port, India for this voyage. The vessel was commanded by Captain Jia Zhongbing, with Chief Engineer Luo Xiaofeng, Chief Officer Yan Liang and First Engineer Li Xiangmin on board. The holds were loaded with mechanical equipment, while 18 wind turbine blades (each 82.6 metres long and 12 metres in overall height) along with heavy steel structural components were stowed on deck. Owing to the three-tier stacked deck cargo arrangement, forward visibility from the forecastle lookout was almost completely blocked.

Notably, this voyage marked the maiden captaincy of Master Jia Zhongbing and the first appointment of Luo Xiaofeng as Chief Engineer.

Sailing in July, the vessel encountered strong southwest monsoons prevailing across the North Indian Ocean, compounded by the heavy vessel traffic typical of the Strait of Malacca. The passage posed unprecedented challenges to ship manoeuvring, cargo securing and the endurance of all crew members.

Prior to departure, the Captain and Chief Officer carried out precise calculations via the ship’s loading computer. Ballast water was trimmed to strike a balance between vessel stability and hull structural stress. Together with shore-based supervisors and the dock master, they devised a customised cargo securing plan. All lashing chains and turnbuckles were tensioned to standards stricter than routine requirements, minimising cargo risks induced by violent vessel rolling amid monsoon weather.

Upon entering the Strait of Malacca — characterised by narrow channels, dense maritime traffic and frequent course alterations — the Captain promptly revised watchkeeping rosters and duty hours. A dual-officer 6-on, 6-off watch system was implemented on the bridge and bridge wings, with round-the-clock lookouts posted at the forecastle. The vessel proceeded under stand-by engine status, with proactive communication and collision avoidance coordination with surrounding vessels. Under the Captain’s precise command, the ship transited the congested waterway safely and smoothly.

Once out into the Indian Ocean, the vessel was pounded by several-metre swells driven by the southwest monsoon. The large lateral wind profile of the wind blades and steel structures subjected the cargo to substantial dynamic loads, causing rhythmic rolling of the hull. Working in close coordination, the Captain and Chief Engineer repeatedly revised operational strategies based on weather forecasts and real-time sea conditions. They adjusted heading and speed timely to keep the bow heading into wind and waves so as to cut down lateral wind exposure. Manual steering was adopted to navigate a zigzag course or execute timely course changes amid wave troughs in response to rolling magnitudes, embodying the crew’s wisdom and courage in contending against harsh marine conditions.

Navigating officers maintained round-the-clock communication with the shore office, submitting four-hourly reports covering heading, speed, ambient sea conditions, cargo lashing integrity and vessel rolling angles. All crew members remained at their posts to guarantee constant safety of every single securing point.

Following days of arduous navigation, the SEA TRAIN successfully weathered the southwest monsoon and safely berthed at Kandla Port, India. This voyage served not only a full-scale test of the vessel’s seaworthiness but also a thorough demonstration of the crew’s professional competence and teamwork. Through solid practice, the SEA TRAIN has penned a safe, efficient and resilient chapter in maritime navigation.
